The root of the tooth has no protective enamel coating, so it is very soft. It starts to soften at pH less than 6.5 - which is almost neutral. It is extremely prone to decay, stripped away by the toothbrush and it is sensitive because the root has nerve endings! So our goal is to prevent the root from being exposed to the world - this will keep your mouth low maintenance! There are many other negatives to shrinking gums, which will be assessed on a case to case basis.
No! But the damage is cumulative - unfortunately the gum, once lost, does not come back by itself. So we see more damage over time.
Common reasons include gum disease (periodontal disease), braces, toothbrush trauma and clenching/grinding your teeth. Tongue piercings also really strip the gums!
We can do gum grafts to bring the gum line up or to create thicker gums to reduce the risk of more recession.
Alternatively we can use fillings to cover and protect the exposed roots. This also blends the root seamlessly to the tooth, brightening and improving your smile!
At Tamworth Complete Dental we are very focused on prevention - a big part of your dental care plan will be trying to understand the root cause of your recession as seeing if we can address this.
Give us a call on 6766 1036! The first thing that we do is take a full set of records, such as photos and a digital scan of your mouth. It is important to figure out if it is getting worse with time or it has stabilised. We will then go through all your options and make a personalised dental care plan for you.
Nobody wants to get dental treatment. What they want is a solution to a dental problem that they have. That's what we do, we listen to what you want and then work with you on a plan to get you to where you want to be.
